One piece top deck is the biggest difference on this chassis. Complaints of the vdf1 being too stiff was a result of double deck design. Vdf1 had paper thin lower deck with swiss cheese cut outs, but people complained the chassis was too stiff overall. Spatially, double decks definitely restricted alot of things(steering, pulley routing etc). Even with a new thicker lower deck, tamiya claims more flex with this design. Not just drinking the coolaid, but it makes sense to me. When I deleted the cross bars with tensioners on vdf1, it became much more flexible. I imagine one piece top deck would be even flexier. All the screws on the vdf1 just makes it more tweak-prone as well. Tamiya has a good track record of making smooth drive trains, so I don't think the 3 belt system would be too bad.

pretty sure Im getting one next month. ill try to remember to start a build thread on it if there isnt one already. The kit is under $400, so it just seems silly not to.

I just realized it has one belt going to the back, and two up front, like TeamMagic E4D. Looks like i'll need to update my CS calculator app for this one

Rear FDR is calculated differently on R31 vs. VDF2

How so? The pulley/belt layout is the same

Nope, it isn't. On R31 power to the rear goes through 4 pulleys, on VDF - through only two

not sure why a 3 belt calculator wouldnt work fine? you can figure out the center and rear belt, and spur/pinion to get your RDR.

I'm talking about my iOS app, which currently has "Middle belt on/off" switch affecting FDR calculation. I'm working on a next version already, which will have 3-way switch for "classic | r31 | vdf2/e4d"

yup, Stalwart is right. With the VDF 2 configuration, there are only 2 pulleys that are changed to change your rear FDR. In the R31, there are 4, giving a finer control of your CS percentage and allowing for much higher CS ratios without running into clearance issues.

I just recently ordered mine and will be arriving on monday. I am wanting to put a Tekin RS combo in it...I don't know which motor would be good for drifting though. I am looking forward to the new bodies that have been released from HPI as well. I want to get Topline MARS pink and yellow rims! I am going to be custom painting my own body using airbrush and have done a couple in the past. Looking forward to the build.

much of a muchness... VDFii has spur on the 'rear' layshaft vs R31 which has it on the 'front' layshaft

Spur on rear means you can UNDERdrive the front more, FDR @rear doesn't get skyhigh = allowing a smaller spur.

i don't get ppl who try to CS to like 200-250% cranking the rear only,
giving [email protected] like 3.0:1 and the whole driveline just bogs down...

Minimum and maximum distances between centers of:
- motor and spur shafts
- center shafts (for middle belt)
- front center shaft and front diff (this one will be hard)
- rear center shaft and rear diff (bloody impossible, will require maths)

- Stock pulley teeth count
- Stock gear teeth count and pitch, if any are included in kit
- Gear/pulley constraints, if any (like yokomo drb having spur size limit)

I've implemented belt length calculation and gear size warnings in my app, and i want to support awkward chassis like VDF2, E4D-MF Pro and R31 in next major release ;)

I couldn't find VDF2 manual PDF in the interwebs. Are stock gears 105/39 0.4m?
