FunkRenegade wrote:One piece upper deck will make it much more flexible than the original vdf. Steering won't be an issue as the front bulkhead section is wide open compared to the original vdf. Drag link on the steering rack adjusts ackerman angle. Looks like a pretty decent car. Tamiya is releasing a 'drift spec' suspension set, so they probably have higher steering angle than their normal racing suspension. For ~usd350 street price, it's a pretty good value. As much as people talk bad about the vdf, many people have good results with the car.

yeah, I dont get the hate either. Add in the fact most US Hobby suppliers dont carry Yokomo and many other "off" brands(associated, traxxas, hpi, and losi are the most common and none have a true drift chassis except HPI and its very limited and needs lots of modding and hop-ups to even compete), you have to get it all off of the internet. Most local hobby stores use great planes or tower hobbies as a supplier. Also, the VDF may not have a bunch of options made by Tamiya themselves, they have one of the largest varieties of suppliers for hop ups.

The thing I don't like is how complicated the design is. R31 has 3 belts and it's a hell of a lot simple design. It's not like all the extra stuff will make it better. I think they just like to have lots of parts so they can sell u bling parts. I have the vdf and I love it but even that is a little too much going on.

People tend to believe you must get all the alloy bling or your car is inferior, but that's just rubbish.

yep, most of the bling just adds weight. Most people arent bashing these enough to see the positives/negatives of aluminum like you would on an offroad vehicle or an onroad racer.

Most other forms of RC racing/bashing people go to aluminum for more durability, or the go overboard with too much aluminum and then it starts to bend and break because theres no plastic/carbon pieces to absorb the contact.

RC drifting, almost all the bling parts are just for looks.

^^ WEAK!

You'd think Tamiya would have some sort of web presence to communicate this to drift fans around the world. If only there was some sort of digital distribution technology to allow this to happen...

I had the choice to take OTA-R31 arms for vertical dampers and mod those for Adjustable caster mod, or i could buy Yokomo Type C lower arms which are ready for adjustable ackerman, but have the dampers under a ~45 degree angle. I've chosen the last option simply because it's much easier to make these aluminum plates you can see on the pic. Dampers are almost vertical with these plates which indeed means i don't have to run high offset rims to stop the rims from hitting the dampers.

Despite the lower deck being thicker 2.5mm, it has hardly any cut outs compared to vdf1. I like the one piece upper deck on the vdf2. Less screws for twisted chassis.

That looks more like a standard TA-05 with the motor moved from a horizontal to a vertical front position and the battery moved from a side to a rear... which opens up the entire middle for electric components... this a pretty good idea... and honestly looks less complicated that a VDF and seem like you could easily convert your standard TA-05 to the this... at a minimal cost… They cant charge a premium price for something this simple???

They will charge premium price look at all the bling. Tamiya bling isn't cheap. It does look simpler than the vdf the third pulley by the spur looks like an after thought. I still dont like the single top bracing.
