Calzone's ZBD RX-7 FD3s '93/'99 Combo Spec.

Postby Calzone » Fri Dec 28, 2012 3:25 pm

After almost 4 years, the (originally) Rockstar RX-7 is retiring. It is just not worth fixing anymore, so that meant i had to get a new shell. This is my third shell and also my third Tamiya RX-7, i just love the look and detail of it. For now it'll just be PS-4 blue until we make a desicion on the livery for our team. I have a lot of fresh idea's and am inspired as hell after all those years looking at the RX7 owners forum

The package:

Cut out and made a raw sketch of the '93 spec bumper lights.

Still working on it though.

Mock-up of the head lights:

Don't have drills at the moment, so i'm kinda stuck here, but it gives me the time to read tutorials on how to paint a shell again

More to come later, have lot's of idea's for this streeto like machine :)

Unfortunatly no :( Due to a mistake while switching health insurance companies, i had to pay two company's instead of only the new one, so i'm still waiting to get back the money from the old company :( Should have it back this month though!

Done little work to it, but i've been working on some Feed sideskirts for it:

Also in doubt about mirrors, shall i go stock, or some RE Amemiya's on the fender?

Soon more, still a diffuser and roof wing to do :)

Look forward to the R-Magic Ai:Z interpretation. 3mm LED would be cool.

The Tamiya RX7 comes standard with the closed headlight lexan bits, i just cut those up to for those headlights :)

I haven't mounted them yet, because they still have to be sprayed ;) I'm not sure either how i'm going to mount these, but i'm probably mounting them with shoe go.

Finally found the time to continue!

The diffuser is almost finished, just some clean up to do now. Sideskirts are both finished and i've masked the shell! I'll be painting it tomorrow :D

When it comes to wheels, my plans were to paint the OTA-R TE37 wheels white, but after 5 times of painting and failing i gave up, i've never had so much trouble with spray painting rims before  So that left me with only one choice, new rims! My eyes fell on the Top Line Mars N-model ver. 2:

What about black to maybe darken it up a bit, or whatever color you are doing the lip and side skirts I would just use that.

The lip will be black indeed and will be the final backing, but i'm affraid it will turnout to dark if i back the blue with black right away

Made some progress!
Painted the mirrors and wing, unfortunately the clear coat on the wing is not very neat, but it's doable:

Body completely painted!

The best of a new body, shinyness 8)

Sideskirts fitted and lip has been sprayed matte:

Headlights on for the looks :)

Need to get some shoe goo this week to glue accessorys in. Still some work to do for next weekend :)

The diffuser and skirts add so much detail, I'm curious to see how this turns out. It'd make me want to get busy on one myself! Hahaa.

Great work though. I love the color selection!

Made an exhaust from an old marker:

thicker paint on shells starts chipping if you do end up crashing it right?

Don't know, i do have some spots that lack paint after last drift day, but luckily it's mostly in the lip, so i can just put some tamiya x- paint behind it. If i don't use this much paint the light can shine through and i was afraid the color would turn too dark if it wasn't backed properly ;)

That looks great.

I might have to get myself a tamiya FD.
