Project: Custom 3-Belt Drift Chassis

Postby lance » Thu Apr 07, 2011 1:03 am

Okay, so the OTA-R31 was out. It was great! Two of the guys here have them.
I have a Sakura Zero for drifting and it's an 'OK' car for CS drifting but is limited in things like weight distribution.
I had put lead weights on the bumper for it to slide better.

I had several ideas of how to convert it to a front-mid mount motor and a 3-belt drive.
But this one looks promising:

Image

Just a rough 3D I made..

This will make the adjustment of the front's IDR easier. In the OTA-R31, the rear's IDR varies more than the front's.
As the OD ratio becomes bigger, the Rear IDR becomes less putting more load to the motor. Although you can adjust the FDR by changing pinions and spurs, it's gonna cost a lot of money to collect them.

With this new design we can let the rear's IDR stay constant, keeping the FDR, and easily make the front drive slower by changing the pulleys. No more thermal shutdowns for you ESCs.

Will need new belts for the middle and rear drives and hope they are available with minor tensioner adjustments. Looking at Fujin's or Xpress' rear belts for the middle and TA-05v2 or OTA-R31 middle belts for the rear. Need to take more measurements before I can finalize the motor mount.

Will need new upper decks as well. But that's not hard to do.

Just need to finalize the design and get a CNC Machine shop to make the parts. some testings and it's off to the track.

Please do share you thoughts.

I love projects like that !
I want to do like that, convert a chassis or make my own, but no money to do make parts by factories who got CNC machines (that I don't own, just a traditional machines)...

Good luck ;)

Is that SOLIDWORKS or TOP SOLID that you use for 3D render ?

excuses smexcuses :P

U don't need CNC machining unless you wanna make 1001pcs all identical.
Time taken to draw CAD etc ... an old skool machinist would have
knocked it out ready for testing by now. ;-)

Parts like that bridge... just an endmill job IMHO.
Bolt 2 slices of alu plate together and work as 1.

If you are going for 3-belt why don`t you go for something like stufcc`s VDF (big fan btw ... would really much like to convert mine also). It seemed really quiet and you will forget to worry about wearing pinions and spurs on parkinglots.

@tamiya, if only I had access to milling machines and drill presses, you'd already be seeing videos of it run. ;)
but my time is limited and i'd rather spend more time planning than exhausting my efforts in travelling to and from machine shops just because the measurements were wrong or something like that.

@martin, i loved stuffcc's FBD as well. but my main focus right now is to work with most of the things that are of "standard" and are mostly available.. love to have mine with an FBD as well.. :D

looking good

think about putting spur on the front pulley, can get away with a smaller gear instead

It's AutoCAD. :D

Thanks!

@tamiya, I thought of that too. But there were more "cons" than "pros".
- using gears will make the ratio between the middle pulleys constant.
- noisy and increased chances of getting stones in the teeth.
- will require adjustable shaft position to set the mesh correctly when using another pair of gears.

no no no... i just meant put the spur on the front layshaft instead of the rear - change nothing else

i'm assuming front shaft runs faster than rear shaft with the beltdrive reduction in between;
you can use a smaller spur on front shaft & still keep the rear shaft turning same speed

= lower overall profile, spur less likely to chew thru your windscreen ;)

+ added benefit, as front pulley is "bigger" u can use the whole pulley as spurgear mount
and there's less chance of spur screws poking thru to foul the centre belt as-is now

If I'll keep the Spur in the front lay shaft, the configuration will be the same as the OTA-R31 (which I am trying to improve) and no, the front shaft will be turning slower.
The size of the spur is critical as the size of middle pulleys differ. The main reason that TCDs/VDFs use big spurs is to ensure the pulleys clear the motor.
No trouble with the screws as the minimum middle pulley that I will use is a 16T TA-05 pulley.

About the "low over-all profile" thing, the max height is barely 70mm from the lower deck. I can make this as low as possible - maximum height will only be the diameter of the spur. But it will present a new list of considerations: mainly, I will have to use saddle pack li-po batts (which I don't have :D ). But we'll see if I choose the LP route.

Thanks for the inputs! much appreciated!

Update.. After a billion years.. :D

Some changes in the original design but nevertheless, the same concept.
Got the pieces waterjet cut so the edges are rough.. Counterbored holes were done manually.. :l

Will clean up the parts before installing..

Next is to mount this little thingy on the actual chassis. Which is going to require a bit of accuracy.. :D

Update..

Holes for motor mount and servo were done (hopefully correct).

I'll need to get something to hold the battery though.. R2 Hobbies perhaps?

And upper decks.

Thanks for the comment guys!

@beetledrift, now it's better than it used to be. May need to train the driver.. *-| Thanks!

Currently running:

rear 37/22
middle 16/30
front 16/40 (COW and heavy oiled gear diff combo)

giving me a 1:2.79 OD ratio and can easily increase the ratio by changing the rear pulley combination.

Here are some more pics of the "unfinished" work. I still need to have something to mount the battery.
I'll make a video soon.

'til then.. cheers!

Note to self: pics first before playing.. :D

So, what if it was 3.44 instead of 2.79?
